THE $100 STARTUP

I wrote about a book called The Art of Non-Conformity back in September, which was right after we moved to the farm (you can see that post here).  I have been hugely inspired by the author, Chris Guillebeau, and I hope you take a moment to check out his blog.

I stumbled upon The Art of Non-Conformity whilst Joey & I were making some huge life-changing choices.  We decided to move to Joey's family's tree farm so he could work on music full-time, and so I could launch my website and have more time to concentrate on creative (and hopefully money-making) ventures (blogging, sewing, photography, etc...).

We weren't sure how it was going to work out, but here we are.  I'm working from home, which allows me to have plenty of time to work on my own projects in the afternoons/evenings.  Joey works on music from sunrise to sunset (more on this coming soon).  We've started gardening.  We get to travel.  And we're able to pay the bills.

Of course, we'd love to have more money.  But I don't think that ever changes, no matter how much income you have (mo' money, mo' problems).

Anyway...Mr. Guillebeau just published a new book.  The $100 Startup.  The book "shows you how to lead a life of adventure, meaning and purpose - and earn a good living."  Sound too good to be true?  It isn't.

I just ordered the book and I can't wait to start it.  I urge you to do the same (it's only $16 on Amazon!).

I hope that one day I can be completely self sufficient in a career that I hatched myself, and I'm hustling to try to make it a reality.  I hope you are doing the same!

BIG D

We had a fabulous weekend in Big D.  Joey's dad hooked us up with a swank hotel room at the Fairmont in Dallas.

They had little Keurig's in each room, $7.50 Fiji water...

...and tiny toiletries!  I love tiny toiletries.

(Obligatory bathroom photo...)

23rd floor.  The view was pretty great.

The reflection of my dress in the window kinda looks like light leak.  Neat!

We also hung out with some great friends.  Jared & Mariah moved to Dallas recently and have a killer house in Lower Greenville.

Their kitties, Jet and Bat Tat, are the coolest.

Those eyes!

This is my gal pal, Lauren.  She can make any situation look fabulous.  Including riding in the back of a pickup truck.  Jealous.

It was a quick little trip, but exactly what we needed.  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

NUPTIALS

I married this guy last year (after 7 years of courting), at Delaney Vineyards in Grapevine, TX.  We just celebrated our one year anniversary last Monday and I can't believe how fast it went by.  I thought I'd share a few of my all time favorite wedding (and engagement) photos.

The only "planned" photo that I really wanted was a huge group picture at the ceremony.  The photo turned out exactly how I imagined it.

My mom surprised us with this amazing wedding topper by Milk and Tea.  I love it so much.  It looks just like us!

We saved the top layer of our wedding cake, and the ball & chain from the grooms cake, and ate a slice last Monday.  It was surprisingly not that disgusting after a year in the freezer.

Joey is very bendy.  I blame my dress for the lack of height in my jump.

We lucked out with the most amazing sunset ever.  Ben pulled us outside for a few impromptu shots and they are hands-down my favorite.

One year down!  Sixty more to go!

MAMA VISIT

My mama's coming to visit today!  Just a quick overnight trip.  It's her first time to see the farm and I'm super excited to show her around.  It's a magical place, ya know.

This is my mom circa mid-late 70's.  That's totally her El Camino in the background.  And her miniature poodle, Pepper.

Sweet coat, Donna!

KITTEN CATTENS

I had a fantastic weekend hanging out with my sis.  We didn't really do anything at all, which was surprisingly wonderful.

I got to see my bebe kitty, Miles.  He's such a little gentleman.  He is still at my sisters due to the wild animal danger zone out here (they love picking on the little guys).

Neely was chipper, as always.  Love the grey whisker (and tongue, obviously).

I attempted to woo them with their new toy.  As you can see, they loved it!

I hope your weekend was animal filled and that your Monday was stress free!

I HEART ANIMALS

I realize that 90% of my posts are about animals and/or critters.  I can't help it.  I live in the woods and rarely see people (I swear I'm not going crazy though...).

Can you blame me?  Look at how he's sitting.  Cuteness overload times one thousand.

HOME IS WHERE I WANT TO BE

Easily one of my favorite songs of all time.  I hope the stars align one day and I get to have a dance party with David Byrne.

If you haven't already, you should watch Stop Making Sense.  It gives me warm fuzzies.

DIY CUSTOM STEPPING STONES

We have been getting a lot of rain lately and our yard turns into a soggy mess.  I love cute step stones, but they're so dang expensive!  Here's a super simple and inexpensive project for all you yard lovers on a budget.

TOTAL COST : About $25 for 20 stepping stones!

1.  SUPPLIES NEEDED : Spray paint in a color of your choice, painters or masking tape, and inexpensive concrete blocks (I purchased mine at Walmart for $1/each).

2.  TAPE OFF YOUR BLOCKS : I'm a minimalist and went with a simple square pattern.  Stripes or a chevron pattern would be super cute too!

3.  SPRAY PAINT YOUR SQUARES : Spray a thin coat of spray paint evenly across the entire surface.

4.  REMOVE YOUR TAPE : And you're done!  Let the paint dry for a few hours before stepping on them.

Send me a photo if you give this a try.  I'd love to see how yours turn out!

I WANT TO GO TO THERE

My overwhelming love for color is no secret.  I probably own two articles of clothing that are black (and that includes shoes).  So it's pretty safe to say that this is my new dream vaycay destination.

Behold...The Saguaro hotel in Palm Springs.  Put a fruity frozen drink in my hand, an over-sized floppy hat on my head, and I'll be happy as a rainbow clam for days.

A gal can dream, right?

THE BACK POCKETS

Our pals, The Back Pockets, are currently on tour (along with our new pals Lily and The Tigers) and stopped by the farm on a night off.  They're a jumbo band from Atlanta, GA and they're some of the greatest people you will ever meet.

They converted this city bus into the most excellent touring vehicle.  They built bunk beds that will sleep 7, the entire thing is painted inside and out, and it says "Unicorns Unite" on the back.  It's pretty magical.

I have mad respect for touring ladies (especially ones that drive giant buses).  These gals are total pros and are great performers.  Plus, they can make Gonzo smile in pictures.  This is very rare.

They were only in town for the night, but we snapped a few family photos before they had to leave.

He has shorts on.  I promise...

Do yourself a flavor and check out some of their tunes, or better yet, go see them while they're on tour!

And do yourself and even BIGGER flavor...and watch this little video they just made.  It's mesmerizing.

You can see more of their touring shenanigans here.

FIRST MONDAY TRADE DAYS

Pretty much everyone in the state of Texas has heard of the First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX.  It is essentially a gigantic 4-day-long flea market that happens the weekend before the first Monday of every month (feel free to read that sentence again).  The vendors are all open Thursday - Monday starting at 8am.

Some booths go all out with giant tents/tarps/display cases/etc...but there are lots of folks that kick it laid-back style.  You typically get the best bargains from the latter.

Joey & I live about 30 minutes away and last weekend was the first time I have visited since we moved here (we have both been a handful of times prior to moving).  I went alone and found that it's kind of awkward taking photos of vendors booths without the intention of buying anything.  I need a pal to go with next time.  It's much easier to be a photo ninja with some backup.

Here is a little Canton checklist for anyone that is interested in checking it out.

  • GET THERE EARLY - There is free street parking really close to the entrance gates, but you need to get there before 9am.  It's also nice to get there early because the vendors are all still in a great mood and it's not too crowded (it gets bananas by 11am).
  • BRING CASH - But only bring the amount that you feel comfortable spending.  Because you will spend it all.  There are ATM machines there, but it's better to plan ahead and know how much you can really afford to spend.
  • BRING SOMETHING TO CARRY YOUR GOODIES - Lots of people bring carts, wagons, buggies, etc.  Vendors typically don't have bags for your purchases and the lot is huge, so it's inconvenient if you need to take something back to your car.  I prefer going with hands only to ensure that I don't buy too much stuff (I'm poor), or with a few grocery bags.
  • BE NICE - Most of the vendors traveled a long way to be here and spent a lot of money doing so.  Most are everyday people who are just trying to make a little extra cash.  Most of their prices are firm and unless you're buying something really expensive, or buying a lot of items from the same vendor, don't try to haggle.  This is just my opinion.  I promise you will not have buyers remorse for getting a pair of vintage sunglasses for $4 instead of $2.
  • BRING A FRIEND - Because it's much more fun that way.

The lady that was selling the spools and keys had so many baskets of amazing little things.  She had an entire table filled with old letterpress letters.  An entire table!  It took all of my might not to buy a ton of those letters.  Seeing as how I don't own a letterpress and all...

She was giving me the stink eye after I snapped these two pics...so I mosied on.

The vendor selling the bundles of vintage fabric was from Illinois!  He had so many amazing pieces of vintage fabric and everything was 50% off.  Swoon.

There are definitely a lot of vendors that have a bunch of crap, but I would say that 90% of the booths are excellent.  The First Monday organizers map out the vendors so that antique/vintage sellers are in one section while people selling brand-new tutus for kids and ladies cougar attire are in another.

I only stayed a few hours, but you could easily spend an entire weekend out here.

Outdoor vendor lots are only $50 for the entire weekend.  I will be more than tempted once I have a few more goodies to sell...
